N0D logo goes here December 12, 2012 - N0D - Special Event Station celebrating The End of the world! - That's right, the end is finally near. According to one of the three Mayan Calendars, the End of the world will occur on Dec 21, 2012. To celebrate this literally once in a lifetime event, Special Event Station N0D (Now Zero Days) will be activated on 10-80 meters and on several satellite passes for three days during and after(?) the end of the world. December 20 is a celebration of the end of the world. December 21, the day of destruction, they will be on the air as long as possible. December 22nd... that is a little iffy right now.

Amateur radio stations around the crumbling globe are invited to contact N0D, who will be operating from a secret, undisclosed location. The operating schedule may be a little erratic as destruction rains down upon us and as long as their antennas hold out. Those of you who may be looking skyward for the end of the world, N0D will be operating on several satellite passes.

This will provide cosmic, maybe even intergalactic coverage for the end of the world as we know it. You can celebrate Doomsday by contacting N0D directly on the air. Amateurs can also become an official Doomsday station by registering on their website, www.nowzerodays.com. You will be given a registration number and the authority to identify yourself as an "Official Doomsday Station" followed by your Doomsday number.

QSL with SASE to KK5W. If Doomsday actually does happen, they regret that a QSL will not be possible so hold on to your SASE until the 22nd at least. Check out their website for a preview of the N0D QSL card.

Amateurs can also become an official Doomsday station by registering on their website. You will be given a registration number and the authority to identify yourself as "Official Doomsday Station" followed by your Doomsday number. Official Doomsday stations will receive the Doomsday Station Certificate.

It is not entirely clear exactly how it will happen. Will it be a cataclysmic shift in the earth's magnetic field, Global Warming on steroids, earthquakes, volcanoes floods, global thermonuclear war, meteor collision, the 10 plagues of Egypt, UFO invasion... who knows? There are scientists, soothsayers and philosophers on both sides of the question. Either way it will be an event worth remembering. ...or maybe there will be no one left to remember it?

More information is available on the Official N0D website, www.nowzerodays.com. You can also e-mail the N0D team at N0D.Doomsday@gmail.com. Check their website (www.nowzerodays.com) for the latest updates.

ARRL logo goes here December 8, 2012 - Northwestern Division Scholarship - At the 2012 Northwestern Division Convention in Seaside, OR, I discussed plans to establish a Northwestern Division Scholarship to be administered by the ARRL Foundation.

This scholarship program was designed by a group of ARRL Northwestern Division members. The Terms of Reference (rules and award criteria) for this scholarship was written, reviewed and ultimately approved by the ARRL Foundation Board of Directors a few months ago. Accordingly, this scholarship program will be in effect and able to accept donations as of December 10, 2012. Gifts and bequeaths to this scholarship fund are tax deductable under the Department of the Treasury (IRS) rules governing Section 501c3 section of the tax code.

Initially, the first scholarship was established in the amount of $1,000 to be awarded in 2013. The dollar amount and number of future scholarships may grow based on donations received by the ARRL Foundation for this specific scholarship. I encourage you to assist in the funding of this program as you review your tax planning during December 2012 and in the future.

The terms of reference for this scholarship can be found at the Northwestern Division Web Site http://www.nwarrl.wetnet.net/node/80.

Please contact me or Vice Director-elect Jim Pace for additional information and to answer questions regarding this new scholarship.

WWA Section logo goes here November 20, 2012 - Section Announcement -
I would like to express my many thanks to the Western Washington Amateur Radio Community, for their dedication and support, these past 5 years. As Section Manager I can truly say that it has been an exciting, rewarding and fun time. As I begin the transition to a new challenge as Vice-Director of the Northwestern Division, I want to encourage all of you to continue with your dedication, hard work and zeal for this great hobby of ours.

Over the next month and a half I will be bringing Assistant Section Manager Monte Simpson, K2MLS, up to speed on the Section programs and progress. As of December 31, 2012, Monte will begin to serve as Western Washington Section Manager for the remainder of my unexpired term, when he will stand for election for a two year term.

Monte is a very capable and experienced individual and will serve you well. Please give him your support and assistance as he leads Western Washington to a new and exciting future.

73, thank you all and good Hamming

black square goes here July 24, 2012 - KC7NA SK -
Jerry was a great friend to many of us, and to Ham Radio. He served as an EC for Federal Way and for the last three years served as ASEC in charge of developing our ARESMAT program. He was the living embodiment of the 'Golden Rule'; Jerry always treated everyone with kindness and respect and he received the same ten fold. He was a member of the Federal Way Amateur Radio Club and a strong proponent of the Amateur Radio hobby. His wisdom and life experience will be missed from those organizations that he was involved in.

WWA Section logo goes here June 15, 2012 - FIELD DAY IS COMMING! - It's almost here!!! Field Day 2012 is just around the corner and preparations are underway in many locations. Don't forget to post your Field Day location with the ARRL at: http://www.arrl.org/field_days/add so folks can find you.

For any ARES units or EOCs operating Field Day, your State Mission number is: 12-T-1133.

Don't forget about the "watering hole" on 10 Meters for Field Day 2012. Two frequencies have been established. For Phone contacts go to: 28.400 (frequency updated June 18, 2012). For CW contacts (yep some of us still use CW) go to 28.030. This should ramp the band up a bit and make for a fun time for folks who enjoy 10 Meters.

Governor Christine Gregoire has ploclaimed June 20 to 26 as Amateur Radio Week, in recogintion of the great service Amateur Radio has provided to Washington State Communities. A PDF file of the Governor's Proclamation is available here.

ARRL logo goes here FCC logo goes here
April 3, 2012 - YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!!!
Do you live in a CC&R- restricted community or participate in EmCom activities?
Do you have deed restrictions or HOA covenants that have prevented you from erecting amateur radio antennas?
Have these restrictions prevented you from full participation in emergency communications activities during disasters?

If your answer is "Yes", ARRL needs to hear about your experience.

Congress has directed the FCC to conduct a study of the uses and capabilities of Amateur Radio Service communications in emergencies and disaster relief and to report back to Congress after 180 days. The FCC was directed to identify, "impediments to enhanced Amateur Radio Service communications, such as the effects of unreasonable or unnecessary private land use restrictions on residential antenna installations" and to make "recommendations regarding the removal of such impediments."

The FCC has issued a Public Notice (PDF of DA 12-523) soliciting input from the public as part of their study. The ARRL is gathering comments from the Amateur Radio community (that's you!) to present as part of its comments on the public notice.

The ARRL is looking specifically for input in two specific areas:
  • Recent Amateur Radio involvement in actual emergency communications and disaster relief, and
  • Specific details about how CC&Rs and other private land use restrictions have impaired licensed Amateurs to participate fully in these disaster relief communications.
If your ability to participate in ARES, RACES, SKYWARN, CERT, or other emergency and disaster relief communications has been limited because the inability to have adequate antennas due to CC&Rs, you are asked to provide that information to the ARRL.

First, we recommend that you write your story in as much detail as practical. Some areas for you to consider including might be:
  • Were there alternative properties without CC&Rs in the area you wished to reside?
  • What exactly does your CC&R allow/prohibit (please include a copy of the specific wording)
  • Have you applied for a waiver of the CC&Rs with the Home Owner's Association/Architectural Review Committee? Were you denied? If so, what was the reason?
To help you share your information with the ARRL, please visit the special ARRL website built to allow you to readily provide the pertinent information.t (www.arrl.org/CCR-Study-Information). This page will present you with an overview of what we are asking and have links to the two forms for you to complete. Please be as factual as you can with the information you provide and please provide only information about events and activities in which you were directly involved.

If you'd like to write out the details of your situation in advance, please do so. Then, they can be either uploaded to the website or they can be sent as an email attachment to CCRinfo@arrl.org.

Keep in mind that the FCC study does not apply to ordinances and zoning laws implemented by the government - such as towns, cities or counties. PRB-1 covers those situations.

Congress has directed the FCC to report back within 180-days. That clock is already counting down. The FCC is only accepting comments for a 45-day period, which will end May 17, 2012. In order for the ARRL to include your information in a common report, we ask that you send it no later than WEDNESDAY APRIL 25. If you'd like more information, please seethe article at the main ARRL website or contact reginfo@arrl.org.

DON'T WAIT!
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW!

WWA logo January 30, 2012 13:20:00 PST - REGISTRATION NOW OPEN FOR 1012 MicroHAMS DIGITAL CONFERENCE - posted by K7CEX - Registration is now open for the 2012 MicroHAMS Digital Conference. The 2012 MDC will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 08:00 (registration opens) to 17:00 on the Microsoft campus at one of their excellent conference facilities. Because the MHDC is being held on Microsoft property, advance registration is recommended - not only is space limited, but there are only a limited number of same-day registrations available. Registration is $25 in advance (includes lunch) and can be performed online at http://www.microhams.com/registration.

Presentations at the MicroHAMS Digital Conference draw heavily from local presenters to reflect both local interests and local Amateur Radio digital technology development. Presentations from past MHDCs are linked from the MicroHAMS web page - http://www.microhams.com/softcontent.aspx?scId=58.

The cost of lunch is included with registration and is provided on site. By popular demand, the 2012 MHDC has more space allocated to "show and tell" tables, and the 90-minute lunch period is specifically UNstructured to allow ample time for individual discussion and visiting the various show and tell tables.

ARES logo January 18, 2012 14:20:00 PST - MANY THANKS TO ARES MEMBERS - posted by K7CEX - Many thanks to all of the ARES teams who reported their status, this morning, after the very interesting snow storm that we had in Western Washington. Your quick response to 'status report requests' helped us to quickly evaluate the current situation.

Other than some travel issues and a few scattered power outages, we seemed to do pretty well. We proved, once again, that ARES is ready and capable of communications "when all else fails".

As this event continues through the rain and melting snow, be safe.

WWA logo January 17, 2012 11:16:00 PST - WINTER STORM WARNING - posted by K7CEX - In past years we have had many 'storm warnings' and of course the media has promoted giving attention to them. Often the storm doesn't materialize or the path eventually goes North or South of us.

We have a similar situation occurring now. The National Weather Service is issuing warnings for both snow and very cold conditions for the next few of days. Maybe we will be fortunate and the storm not materialize, but it looks otherwise at this time.

So, prepare yourself, your family and property for a few days of difficult driving and unusual temperatures. Please slow down, turn on your headlights and be very careful driving on snowy road surfaces. Keep your cell phone and Amateur Radio with you and make sure it is charged up in case you need to call for assistance.

Be safe, stay warm and enjoy one more aspect of the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
